If you don’t know it by now, I have a huge interest in the Puritan, Jonathan Edwards. First, because I am named after him. Second, because Edwards was, and still is, one of the greatest minds of America. And third, his sermons and his writings have impacted much of my understanding of God’s Word.

So, when I saw that The Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia was released in November 2017, I knew I had to add it to my shelf.

As the title suggests, it really is an encyclopedia of the great preacher of the 18th century. The encyclopedia covers many topics that Edwards himself either wrote about, preached on, or even thought about in his private life.

Some of the topics contributed by many authors around the world include:

  • Adoption
  • Biblical Languages
  • Catechism
  • Deacons
  • Exegesis
  • Future State
  • Homiletics
  • Marriage
  • John Newton
  • Prayer
  • Spiritual Gifts
  • Visible Saints
  • Women

I really enjoyed reading this resource! As a student of Edwards and his work, The Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia is a reference tool that summarizes much of his work in only a couple of pages for each topic. But, not only does it summarize Edwards view or teaching on a topic like “Adoption”, the entries also point the reader to other sources related to Edwards teaching/view. If you want to understand the mind of Edwards in a brief summary fashion, this is the volume for you!

I highly recommend this work to all! It is a great tool for the Church and it is an easy read that will make the reader want to return to it again and again throughout the years to come.
