Lady Wisdom cries aloud in the streets. Do you hear her?
Proverbs 1:22 (ESV)
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?”
Her call can be heard at the head of the noisy streets and at the entrance of the city gates! She is calling out for you to hear! “How long,” she asks, “How long!” Wisdom sees you, O simple one, and she calls out against your naivete, you who will believe anything you hear but fail to examine anything to see if it is true!
“How long,” she cries, “How long!” Lady Wisdom sees your heart, O scoffer, you who think you know it all, yet in your scorning prove you know nothing!
“How long,” Wisdom asks, “How long?” The Lady sees you, O fool, you who are ignorant of the truth. While you enjoy your foolishness you are blind to how much of a fool you really are! The glorious Lady Wisdom looks at your heart and finds you hate any knowledge altogether! You care only about the here and now, yet fail to see there is a time of recompense coming for your soul because you neglect eternal things.
Can you hear the indictment? You have been charged with being gullible, O simple one. Wisdom has charged you, O scoffer, for boasting in your own knowledge! The Lady has called out against you, O fool, for your ignorance, humanism, and materialism! What say you to such charges?
I pray you will heed the Lady’s invitation:
Proverbs 1:23 (ESV)
If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.
Wisdom invites you simple ones, you scoffers, and you fools to repent at her reproof.
“This is a call to repentance and faith. She promises to change their hearts and teach them the wisdom of God from the Word of God.”
Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). Be Skillful (p. 27). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
What say you? Will you turn from your naivete, your scoffing, and your foolishness? Will you turn to the only source of hope to become wise? Jesus Christ is standing at your door calling, “Repent and believe My gospel!” Will you heed his voice? If you do not, what happens in the rest of Proverbs 1:24–33 will come upon you. Don’t ignore the wise counsel of Wisdom. Don’t refuse this glorious invitation.
