At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. What pleasures are at the right hand of the LORD? Certainly not earthly pleasures, for they are fleeting and shall pass away. The LORD does not pass away, thus his pleasures shall not be like those here on earth. These pleasures are said to be forevermore. They are never ending and all satisfying. So, what exactly are these pleasures that last forevermore at the right hand of God, the God whose presence brings the fullness of joy, and the God who makes known the path of life? There are many pleasures that could be listed! The pleasure of sitting in the very presence of Almighty God for eternity. The pleasure of experiencing the radiance of his glory. The pleasure of never having pain, sorrow, or death any longer. The pleasure of being able to love the LORD our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our might perfectly without sin interfering.
I doubt David had this on his mind while penning this Psalm under the influence of the Holy Spirit, but I believe the best pleasure to be enjoyed is literally sitting at the right hand of God now. The best pleasure to be enjoyed forevermore is the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ Jesus “is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3). He is the pleasure that will not fade or pass away like earthly pleasures do and will. Christ is the pleasure that can be enjoyed for eternity! Jesus is the pleasure that is indeed sitting at the right hand of the Father on high.
How do we attain such a pleasure? Christ was clear when he was speaking to Nicodemus in the Gospel of John chapter three. “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus asks how can one be born again. The Lord replies that being born again comes by the washing of the Spirit. In other words, one must be made into a new creation by God the Spirit in order to be allowed to experience the pleasures at the right hand of the LORD.
What must be done on our part then to receive such a cleansing and gain admittance into the kingdom of such pleasure? Jesus provides the solution. This solution is not a thing, or a word, or a place, or a concept, but a person. The person is himself. Jesus Christ is the solution. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Jesus Christ is the solution. He makes known to us the path of life. He offers eternal life. This eternal life is going to be lived in the presence of the Son, which brings the fullness of joy. Christ is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on high and is the pleasure himself that will endure forevermore.
So, what are you enjoying here on this earth that you would take pleasure in more than Christ? Money? Friends? Family, even? Reputation? Work? All these pleasures will pass away. But, at the right hand of the Majesty on high is seated Christ, our Savior, Redeemer, and pleasure forevermore.
