Continuing to pull from Sovereign Grace’s album “Sooner Count the Stars” the hymn for today is the 4th song this week from their album. You can see the other three here:

  1. Hymn of the Day: Lamb of God
  2. Hymn of the Day: Sooner Count the Stars
  3. Hymn of the Day: Blessed Assurance (Sovereign Grace version)

Whereas yesterday’s hymn was inspired by a classic hymn, today’s song, Cling to Christ, is an original song by Sovereign Grace Music. Since it is most likely unfamiliar to you take a listen before reading on.

Philippians 3:7–10 (ESV)

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

We could come to God with our hands full of things we pride ourselves in like our accomplishments, our knowledge, our job, our background, or how many Bible verses we memorized. All of this should be counted as rubbish compared to Christ. So, set your works and accomplishments aside and come cling to Christ. But, praise God that our salvation does not depend on how well we cling to Christ! Our salvation is secure because of what he has done for us and that he clings to us!

It’s more than I can do
To keep my hold on You
But all my hope and peace
Is that You cling to me

Like Solomon in Ecclesiastes, we should recognize that all we do here on earth will eventually pass away. Christ is the treasure that will never fade away. He alone is our endless joy. He alone is our hope and peace and he clings to us! What a glorious truth!
