What have you learned about yourself from this series? I hope you are growing with me! I have to say that I have enjoyed writing these posts because I have been reassured of who I am in Christ as well!
Today, let me remind you because this is not really a “lightbulb” moment of what Christ has done for you. You have been redeemed and forgiven of all your sins in Christ. I wish I could end the post right there! That is the most marvelous statement, is it not?
Colossians 1:13–14 (ESV)
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
A Prisoner Set Free
You are like a prisoner set free! Actually, you really are a prisoner set free! You were in the clutches of sin and death after all!
The Bonds Are Broken
Not only were you a prisoner set free, but the bonds have been cut as well. Sometimes we act like we are still prisoners right? Maybe you have seen the video of the elephant who was always tied up to a post by a rope. That is how it grew up. That is all it knew. The elephant knew there was a rope and it held the elephant captive from wandering. Well, one day the master didn’t tie him to the pole with the rope. Do you know what happened? The elephant did not attempt to wander outside of his usual wandering zone. Why? Because that is all he knew. Don’t be like the elephant friends. Not only has the cage door been opened, but the bonds that hold you in the cell have been broken as well!
The Price Has Been Paid
Remember when I posted that we were servants/slaves to Christ a few days ago? Well, this is because he has bought you, but also because he has paid the debt we owed due to sin. We could not pay the debt off. Imagine the worst amount of debt someone could accumulate and then multiply that by infinity. That is how much we owed and the wages for that debt is death. Yet, He (Christ) came to pay a debt He didn’t owe because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay. He paid our debt with his blood and purchased you for himself.
Be Zealous For Good Works
Seeing as how we were imprisoned and set free, bound to sin and Christ cuts the rope, he bought us with his blood in order to purify us, we should then change the way we live. Suppose you were the worst criminal in all the world. You were serving an infinite sentence in prison. Then, the leader of your country waves all charges against you and declares that you are now a free person. What should you do next? Perhaps you would go back to your old criminal ways, but what if the leader of your country has given you all the benefits of his position? You can eat what you want, go where you want, infinite amount of money in your wallet, and you have been promised to reign with this leader who is very powerful, loving, kind, and forgiving! What then would you do? Why in the world would you live like a criminal when you can be a king/queen/president/co-heir! That is who you are in Christ! Your crimes and debt are forgiven and you have been promoted to co-heir with Christ!
Romans 8:17 (ESV)
17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
So, this is who you are now! The prison door has been swung wide, your chains are gone, you have been bought by the King of kings, and you have been made sons/daughters/ and co-heirs with Christ himself! Why return to your old life when Christ offers so much more!
