In case you missed the Hymn of the Day yesterday, here is the link: Hymn of the Day: Rock of Ages
Today’s Hymn of the Day is another popular hymn. Julia Harriet Johnston (1849-1919), wrote nearly 500 hymns in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but Grace Greater Than Our Sin, also known as Marvelous Grace of Our Loving Lord, is probably her most famous. Her hymn focuses on the grace of God. If it weren’t for His grace no one would qualify for heaven. “None is righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10; ff. Ps. 14:1). Yet, in Christ, God’s grace has been lavished upon many. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Some of us have a hard time believing that God’s grace is truly greater than our sin. We foolishly think that no one could love a broken, hopeless person such as ourselves. This is foolish because on the cross the blood of the Lamb of God was spilled precisely because God loves you. His marvelous grace, that infinite grace pardons and cleanses all unrighteousness. The blood of Jesus is the all-purpose sin stain remover. Will you reject his cleansing “Tide” and stay in your sin-stained clothes? Or, will you let him graciously apply his blood to your garments replacing your stained clothes with spotless, pure, and blazing white robes?
